Tinkerbell and Toby
Found orphaned after the Joplin Tornado
Here are Toby and Tinkerbell. These little papillons, nearly hairless with mange and fleas, were pulled from rubble in Joplin, after the tornado, They were approximately six weeks old, and it was six weeks after the tornado hit that they were found. Their mom lay dead nearby. What was their story? We'll never know for sure. They were possibly born directly after the storm, and their mother was able to find enough to eat to sustain herself and her babies. When she could go no more, she lay down and died. Did the dogs belong to a breeder who was killed in the storm? We do not know how many puppies were in the litter, or even for sure that the mange-covered female was the mother of these puppies.
If such was their story, why were puppies who lay in the debris of a tornado for six weeks while their mother scrounged for food, sweet and social instead of feral? True, they are exceptionally sweet-natured, but when and how did they acquire this learned behavior?
Did someone, so discouraged with damage and the economic situation, dump a female consumed with mange and young puppies where someone was sure to find them as they cleaned? Many desperate decisions were made at a time when there were few choices. We will never know for sure what happened, and I mourn the loss of the faithful mom who gave her own life but saved her babies. I am thankful to have been blessed with two needy little puppies who survived while surrounded by such devastation.
The "before" pictures were taken the day I got Toby and Tinkerbell. As you can see, they've come a long way and have become absolutely beautiful, loving, perfect adults. They now need to be in their own forever home. They must be adopted together. They have never been apart, and they are seldom very far from one another. They love to run and chase each other in huge circles, the leader turning sharp angles with the chaser right behind. They are happy, healthy adults. If you are interested in adopting a lap full of pure delight, Toby and Tink will make you very happy.
